Antelope Hunting in Colorado
Antelope
hunting on our eastern plains ranches is simply the most fun
hunt we offer. With a rifle we have not had a hunter hunt past
the 2nd day yet. That takes all the pressure off the hunter,
allowing them to relax and enjoy looking over lots and lots of
antelope. Waiting until you find the one that makes your heart
pump fast, before pulling the trigger.
Archery
is another story altogether. Exciting? You bet. Challenging?
Perhaps one of the toughest animals to sneak up to within bow
range in North America. Antelope are fascinating animals.
Their eyesight is second to none. They are really
unpredictable. At times they seem like geniuses, and then
their enormous curiosity will lead them to appear stupid. One
day a buck will come to a decoy and the next he’ll run from
it. Weather plays a big role too. If it’s dry you can set a
blind on a water hole, but if it rains, water is too abundant
to offer decent shooting opportunities. In 2008 we hosted 10
very good hunters. They harvested 6 antelope bucks, all spot
and stalk, with shots between 40 and 60 yard shots. All
hunters had multiple shot opportunities, and no animals were
injured and not harvested. But this hunt is really tough. Each
night every hunter told of close encounters. If you blow a
stalk, you simply find another bunch and try again. This hunt
typically does not require a guide. We call the hunts
semi-guided because a host will point you in the right
direction, and help when needed. We will literally hunt right
out of the hunt house. You can walk or drive. There’s 30,000
acres of Antelope heaven.
This
hunt is for the guy or gal who is willing to work hard, and
maybe go home empty handed but with memories that will bring
you back for another whack at them. If you harvest, YOU EARNED
IT and can be proud of your achievement. Most outfits boast
only about a 30% success rate. So taking an antelope with a
bow is no small achievement. If you’re an intense hunter why
not give this a try!!!
