Buffalo Hunting
in Colorado
Hunting
Buffalo is hard for some hunters to get their mind around.
To some they may appear stupid in their natural environment.
They seem to range along in big herds eating away at the
prairie. And not paying too much attention to people when
they stop to look at them. Buffalo are not typical in any
sense to other game species in America. The thing that
makes them so different is their total lack of fear. They
don’t have the natural fear of humans that most animals
possess. Nor does the sound of a rifle scare them in the
least. It can make you think that they are simply stupid.
But don’t let yourself be fooled. They are not stupid,
they simply have no natural fear. They don’t fear
wolves or any other beast because as a group they can trample
anything else on the plains. We just look like another
inferior beast to them. In Yellowstone National Park they
have lots of what they call Buffalo Human incidents. This
is a granola eaters way of saying that the buffalo are
beating up tourists. It happens with frequency.
Thus as a hunter you have to keep this in mind. As your
guides we make sure we always have a safe exit. Be it a truck
parked within running distance or some trees to climb. One
must respect the sheer mass of a big buffalo, let alone a
herd of them. My good friend Donny Carr with Golden Eagle
Outfitters hunted a medium sized bull in Colorado with his
bow. The Bull ended up chasing him up a tree and tap danced
on his bow for spite.
There
is something special about hunting a buffalo. It can’t
help but bring you closer to the pioneers of this great country
who either hunted them or had to contend with them while
moving west over the great plains. Harvesting a buffalo with
a big 50 or a carbine really takes you back in time. And
if you're quick on your feet and like a little danger, archery
can be a special thrill. For most however, a modern rifle
works just fine to experience the thrill of exposing yourself
to the power of a herd of buffalo. This is an experience
that may not be available in the future of our ever changing
world. Come take in this thrilling experience while you still
can!
